Bacterial antibiotic resistance has become a major public health issue in the world. Increasing the efficacy of existing antibiotics is a promising strategy against antibiotic resistance. The bacterial resistance research team led by Fu Xinmiao, a researcher in the College of Life Sciences of FNU, has developed a variety of new synergistic methods in recent years (Sci Rep, 2015; Front Microbiol, 2019; Front Cell Infect Microbiol, 2020; mBio, 2020; Front. Microbiol., 2021; Antimicrob Agents Chemother, 2022; ACS Infectious Diseases 2022, 2023), focusing on aminoglycoside antibiotics. Recently, the research group has made important progress in the field of antibiotic synergism, discovered that heat shock could dramatically enhance the efficacy of aminoglycoside antibiotics in killing various bacteria, and revealed its mechanism of action. The research findings were published in the top academic journal, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), in the form of research paper. This research helps to further understand the bactericidal mechanism of aminoglycoside antibiotics, and also lays a foundation for the development of new methods based on heat shock combined with aminoglycoside antibiotics in the treatment of clinical bacterial infections.

FNU is the first signature unit and the only corresponding author unit of the paper, with researcher Fu Xinmiao as the corresponding author of this paper and Lv Boyan and Huang Xuebing, a postdoctoral student and a master student, as the co-first author. Yang Bin, Associate Professor, from the First Affiliated Hospital of Fujian Medical University, Song yizhi, the researcher from Suzhou Institute of Biomedical Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Prof. Thomas K. Wood from Pennsylvania State University are the co-authors. The work was funded by such projects as the Natural Science Foundation of China, General Project of Fujian Natural Science Foundation, High-level Talents Program of Fujian Normal University and Innovation Team in Key Areas.
